Walking on Broken Glass by Annie Lennox has provided me with much inspiration over the years and has been a key feel-good performance song for everyone in RC since I introduced it in 2008/9.
It never fades and like so many other well-written pop songs, its shelf-life continues years after its conception without even a hint of ageing. I first fell in love with it at University when it featured as the lead track of Lennox’s ‘Diva’ Album.
I was 18 and in my first year studying Popular Music and Recording at Salford University and my lecturer, Dr Stan Hawkins, brought the song to my attention suggesting it would suit my voice and style. He handed me the songbook there and then in the corridor making me promise to return it to him as soon as I’d bought my own copy (which I did forthwith!).
I already admired Annie Lennox for her vocals, her range, her songwriting and was a huge fan of the Eurythmics’s back catalogue.
Walking on Broken Glass optimised her skills and was giving her fans something new and energising along with some other fantastic new songs on the same album. Little did I know back then as I rushed to find a spare piano at the university and open up the beautiful score to begin playing, that we would release our very own version of the song 18 years later with Decca/Universal and be singing it and enjoying it in our masses around the country!
