As the schools break up and the contrary British summer weather forces us, as always, to have a plan B in case it buckets down, many of us will be choosing to abandon the UK and head off to more reliable and warmer, exotic, climates to take their well-earned break abroad!
For some however, the UK offers an easier and more cost-efficient option whether it’s a staycation or mini break in a coastal or tourist resort.
Growing up, as well as the years we spent visitng our beloved island of Jersey, my parents used to take my sister Liz and I to Cornwall’s Watergate Bay, where we would play in the waves for many happy hours refusing to come out because it was so much fun but in turn having to cope with our long dark hair which would tangle into horrendous knots from the salt and water. My patient and lovely mum would then spend hours each evening trying to comb it all through smothering our heads with conditioner and desperately trying not to cause any tears!
Some years after our years visiting Cornwall, my parents chose Bournemouth and we spent many happy years in our early teens visiting Boscombe and enjoying the piers, town and local attractions. I have many happy memories of these years and the friends we would make, the sandcastle competitions and penny-arcades and it just goes to show that staying in the UK and creating memories with family and friends will always be something special and precious as we grow older!
This summer will be just as special as we return, as a family, to our favourite destination – Jersey! As Hamilton turns 3 in August, we will be spending a week together in the same hotel on the island that both my mum used to visit as a little girl in the 1950s and where she and my Dad took my sister and me as toddlers in the 1970s! We will be 3 generations together and I can only imagine and hope that Hamilton will begin his own journey making memories and enjoying wonderful UK holidays with friends and family around him!
